Bullas Wine Museum
BACK
The Bullas Wine Museum came into being as a response to the area's wine-growing tradition. It is designed to be a centre for services and activities related to the promotion of tourism and culture in Bullas and its wine-producing area. The exhibition presents all the processes involved in wine making in an educational way, clearly differentiating between traditional and present-day methods.
It is located in a former 19th Century bodega, the primitive facilities of which still remain, and which originally used to belong to one of the richest and most influential families in the district: the Melgares de Aguilar. Its more than 1400 square metres offer visitors ample opportunity to spend time enjoying the wine-related cultural milieu. It also features a shop selling wine-related products, various wine-tasting rooms, temporary exhibitions, courses and seminars.
Visits: Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 to 14:00.

A tour of Bullas
BACK
In the town centre of Bullas alone, there are more than 200 fully- or partly-conserved traditional bodegas, the majority of which were built between the 18th and 19th Centuries. Evidence of this can be found right in the heart of the town, in the Plaza de España, with the Monumento al Viticultor or Monument to the Wine Grower, an imposing bronze sculpture by Rafael Pi Belda, which represents the noble art of grape-treading and serves as homage to all those who have contributed to forging the culture of wine in this area.
This passion for everything wine-related is transmitted, in part, thanks to the Wine Museum, which is located in one of the old Kingdom of Murcia's largest and most productive wineries, and is one of the most important visitor attractions in this remarkable town.
The Plaza de España is the perfect place to start your journey and to discover some of the most interesting and picturesque attractions the town has in store. Just behind the Grape-Treader is the easily recognisable Casa de los Melgares with its blue, art nouveau style façade. The house was built in 1925 by the Melgares, one of the richest and most powerful families in Bullas. Years later, the building was acquired by the Town Council, who converted it into a Cultural Centre, which currently houses the Public Library and Historical Archive amongst other services.
Another of the architectural treasures in the centre of Bullas is, without a doubt, the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Parish Church, a beautiful example of 18th Century Murcian Baroque architecture. Inside, visitors can delight in images such as St. John the Evangelist, from the Salzillo school. Behind the church, in Calle Rosario, there is another very popular nobleman's mansion that is very dear to the people of Bullas, the Don Pepe Marsilla House & Museum. Built in 1900, today it is home to an interesting ethnographic collection that will take you back to the way of life at the end of the 19th Century, using state-of-the-art scenographic techniques.
Very close by is the Plaza Vieja, the town's historical social hub, and the Plaza del Castillo, where the town's mediaeval fortress, of which there are still some remains, used to be located. Nowadays, on the first Sunday in each month, the two Plazas are the setting for the famous 'El Zacatín' street market, the Region of Murcia's leading craft market, where visitors are sure to find exquisite souvenirs.
From the Plaza de España, the Camino Real (Royal Road), along which there are several noble mansions, will take you to the Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower), which was built at the beginning of the 20th Century to regulate irrigation shifts amongst the farmers. Together, the tower of the Parish Church and the Clock Tower give Bullas its distinctive skyline.
Living Nature
BACK
But Bullas is much more than just good wine and offers a wide variety of leisure options. From the old town to the surrounding valleys, visitors can walk to their heart's content, enjoying the exuberant countryside that naturally embellishes these mythical surroundings.
Highlights include the Paraje de La Rafa, a countryside area that was once a silk-farming station. As well as being the point of origin for several short-distance footpaths, it is also the starting point for the El Romero ecotourism trail, which forms part of the Region of Murcia's network of walking routes. La Rafa offers numerous services for all types of visitor: a camp site, restaurants, a swimming pool, sports facilities... Worthy of special mention are the bioclimatic apartments at the Centre for Agroecology and the Environment (CEAMA) which are located here and are, themselves, a model of sustainable architecture.
Another example of the area's huge natural wealth can be found at the Paraje del Carrascalejo, a beautiful wood that is home to the Rambla de la Regidora stream and through which the El Romero ecotourism trail also passes before joining up with the North-West Green Route. In addition to the evergreen oaks, there is a dense copse of willow and poplar trees growing along the banks of the stream, as well as a tangle of brambles, wild roses, hawthorn, rushes and oleander. Hidden in the midst of the thicket is the Cristo del Carrascalejo (Christ of El Carrascalejo). Many are the miracles and legends attributed to this figure of marble-like appearance, which is the reason why it is common for visitors to find flowers and candles at his feet.
Continuing along the course of the River Mula, there is more vibrant scenery to be enjoyed, linked to the wealth of water, with places of great environmental value. The area around the river offers endless opportunities for outdoor pursuits in natural surroundings. Spots such as the Salto del Usero or the Pasico Ucenda are sure to tempt visitors to take a cool dip in their crystal-clear waters. All along the river, there are numerous vestiges of old flour mills, with highlights including the Molino de Arriba and the Molino de Abajo, the latter of which has been converted into a guesthouse and restaurant.
One of the prettiest times of year in Bullas, and a real treat for visitors, is when the almond trees are in bloom. An unprecedented display that covers the surroundings in hues of white and pink, offering an unrivalled attraction for nature lovers.
Very close by, further riches can found on El Castellar, a hill noted for its archaeological remains and environmental value.
Picking up the area's spirit once again and getting back to its wine-growing origins, the scenic natural interest of the Aceniche Valley is also worthy of mention, as is the Paraje de la Venta del Pino, where vines grow capriciously to later be reincarnated, following a painstaking production process, as the most select of red wines. Here, travellers will find more abrupt terrain, with uplands such as La Lavia and Los Cuchillos forming an exceptionally attractive landscape, where there are several different trekking routes and wineries to visit on the Bullas Wine Route, which has been accredited by the National Department of Tourism (Turespaña) as a 'Wine Route of Spain'.
What you Shouldn't miss
A LOCAL HIGHLIGHT
EL SALTO DEL USEROLocated on the course of the River Mula, this is an exceptionally beautiful spot, of great hydrological, geomorphological and sedimentological interest. The erosion of the river bed has given rise to an unusual vault-like structure, with water plunging down to the bottom in a 3- to 4-metre-high cascade. Because of the environmental value of the surroundings and its crystalline waters, the Salto del Usero is generally very popular with visitors and local people in summer.
CRAFT MARKET
'EL ZACATÍN'The first Sunday each month, the heart of the town of Bullas bustles with life at the traditional 'El Zacatín' street market. Between the Plaza Vieja and the Plaza del Castillo, you can find all manner of crafts and natural products: pottery, embroidery, sausages, sweets, aromatic herbs, organic food... As well as being able to sample the most exquisite food and enjoy street entertainment, visitors can also take a step back into the past and discover how these products are made through demonstrations of ancient crafts.
AN ACTIVITY
TREKKING IN EL ROMEROThe El Romero Nature Trail has been designed to be followed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The trail starts at the La Rafa' tourist and recreational complex, and runs through vineyards and forested areas of great environmental value close to the Sierra de Burete and Sierra de Lavia. Along the way, you can see the Paraje del Carrascalejo, where Bullas' oldest working winery, which has been producing wine since the mid 19th Century, is located.
A CELEBRATION
FIESTA DEL VINOTaking place over the last weekend in September, this is the forerunner to the fiestas in honour of the town's patron, Our Lady of the Rosary. Over the weekend, a large number of activities related to the district's star product take place. These include the appointment of the Master of the Wine, the Treading of the Grapes and the Blessing of the First Must, the inauguration of the Wine Fountain and guided visits to the town's wine facilities, to name but a few. At the same time the Feria de la Tapa or Tapas Fair also takes place, where local people and visitors can enjoy the tastiest creations from local restaurants in a festive atmosphere.
Top 10
Bullas has been traditionally considered as the entrance to the North West of Murcia. Life in this village revolves around wine, making possible a "perfect match" between culture and vine, history and a green and mountainous nature
WINE ROUTE
If you're crazy about top-quality wine, you'll really love Bullas. The best option to taste his Designation of Origin is following this route which includes wine-tastings, museums, wineries and walks through vineyards. There are more than 200 traditional and preserved (totally or partially) wineries only in the town centre. This is the best way to learn, taste and, specially, to enjoy, which is the main purpose.
MORE ABOUT WINE
The Wine Museum and the Don Pepe Marsilla House Museum are two places to be visited. The first one is located in a traditional and perfectly preserved wine cellar. Here, it's possible to discover the making process of wine in traditional and modern ways of elaboration. There's a special relationship between Bullas and the viticulture since Roman times. Don't forget to go down to the cellar surrounded by brick vaults and large earthenware jars partially buried in the ground. At Pepe Marsilla House Museum, it seems that the clock stopped in 1900. The frescoes, trompe l'oeil and the rest of modernist décor in the residential area compete by its spectacular design with work area and wineries.
SHOPPING & HANDICRAFTS MARKETS
El Zacatín market is hold on the first Sunday of each month transforming the surroundings of the Plaza Vieja and Plaza del Castillo in an epicenter of handicrafts with jugglers, storytellers, pipers and alchemists of the Middle Ages. Don't miss any of the handicrafts collections about old and forgotten trades and enjoy the tastings. As a curiosity, this is the only market held in the region throughout the year.
KEEP THE SECRET
If you want to go for a dip in revitalising waters between exuberant nature, then the Salto del Usero, a waterfall of several feet of altitude, won't disappoint you. Legend has it that a Moorish died in these waters for the love of a Christian. Since then, every year on the night of San Juan the scene's recreated to celebrate this magical evening. If you come, it's important not to forget to test the water that the Moorish has in her pitcher. It's supposed to give good luck!
AMONG VINEYARDS
Located six kilometers far away from the town, the Valle del Aceniche (Aceniche Valley) is a beautiful and natural spot surrounded by pine groves where there're strains over half a century old. The perfect destination for those fleeing the heat, due to its highland, fresh air and a cool microclimate. The place is so beautiful that it seems that everything has been placed on purpose, as in a painting. No matter if you travel on foot, by bike or by all-terrain vehicle... you'll want to stay there forever!
MODERNIST BULLAS
From the Plaza de España, this route passes through the Camino Real and Avenida de Cehegín, and also through stately buildings of the 20th century. The Clock Tower, the façades of the Carreño and Pascual Marsilla houses are some of the modernist artists of interest. It's an elegant and lively promenade, which fascinates by its irregular shapes and intense chromaticism of buildings.
THE WINE FESTIVAL
Jazz and flamenco concerts, recitals, painting exhibitions and other activities such as wine-tastings and routes of the tapa are essential in this festival celebrated in February where wine is, without question, the star. This is a great opportunity to taste the best Designation of Origin wines and to enjoy wine pairings. People in Bullas said: "If you come to Bullas, drink wine, don't be shy!"
NATURAL PARADISE
For those fleeing from the rush of the city and the stress, just one mile from the center of the town they'll find paradise: La Rafa, the perfect place to charge their batteries and relax. There're different possibilities to choose: going round to the camping or to the Centro de Agroecología y Medio Ambiente de Murcia (Center for Agroecology and Environment of Murcia), CEAMA. The last one, apart from offering workshops and practices of organic farming and eco-development, proposes themed routes, workshops, visits to the observatory and other leisure activities.
DON'T STOP THE PARTY!
By the end of September and in full grape harvest, festivals are held in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, saint patron of the town chosen by popular vote in 1723. Each year, these celebrations attract tourists and curious neighbors, who come to the Plaza Vieja to enjoy the traditional grape treading, the blessing of the first grape juice and the opening of the wine fountain. Most revelers will feel at home in the Diana, celebrations that start on Saturday at 7 a.m., when hundreds of people flock to launch dozens of kilos of flour, raw eggs and gallons of beer and wine. Are you ready?
SWEET TEMPTATION
Although there's no doubt that you'll find "torrijas" (bread soaked in milk, fried and then coated with sugar) in many other places, we assure you that there're no others as "torrijas" from Bullas. So remember that you can¿t leave without tasting these sponge cakes dipped in syrup or buy them. In addition to this delicious dessert, we encourage you to take a look at the local handicrafts and to try honey, sausages and local products.
